I'm a night person. I don't stay up really late but I start to study around 7:30pm after i've fixed dinner and the kids are settled down. I stop studying on most nights at 10pm. The night before a test, I do a four hour block from 7pm-11pm with a 15 minute break in between. Then I do a 1 hour last minute look over the day of the test before class.

I study any time and anywhere....at dance class, hockey games, work, have books open when I am driving in the car.....you get the picture.

Every Tuesday and Thrusday morning I am at Caribou Coffee for HOURS on end...they know me. The other day I walked in and ordered a medium latte. The lady made me a large and told me that she had watched me studying the week before and that a medium just wouldn't cut it.

I study in the morning after I send my 8yr old off to school and while my lazy 3yr old is sleeping. I hate mornings, and if I didn't have to wake up with my 8yr old, I wouldn't do it. But I find that my brain is clear and a sponge at that time, I also study after classes. I stay after and study before my next class and I set aside time on the weekends to go to the library. I make a schedule or else I wouldn't get much done as I am lazy and a procrastinator. If you have kids, get away from them for good study time. Than is what works for me. But other people can study wiht a lot going on around them, but I'm ADD so I CANT!!

I discovered last semester that my brain is 100% sponge if I go to sleep for few hrs and then wake up at 2 or 3 a.m. It works for me and I'm very happy with it. After a long day with classes, and kids...I hit the pillow to get some rest and then I wake up rested & fresh and my mind is extra clear + the home is very quiet!

I do like some noise. I have the Weather Channel with "low" volume...I just need to hear something on [Big Grin]

I also got a digital recorder to record my own voice. Then I put in on CD, and go to bed with it, listen to it in the car since I commute to school....I hope I don't end up in a mental institution by the end of the semester. But I feel more and more comfortable with the material doing what a call masive repetition.

Get the textbook in front of you with a book stand (it's like $3 at the bookstore) that way you are reading at eye level almost, and you back and neck don't suffer...

I'm a night person, but I'm trying to make myself a morning person as well [yes]

I do all of my studying during my kids' naptime. ;-) This was easier when I just had one. She took a predictable nap every afternoon for at least 2 hours (sometimes 4!). Now that I have two kids it's a little tougher. The oldest still takes her predictable nap and it's getting easier to get the baby down at the same time, though she doesn't usually sleep quite as long.

It's working well for us. I do try to get some work done if they are both awake but at least happy (and not needing my constant attention). I finished an entire full length physical sciences section for the MCAT yesterday, just taking one break to tend to the baby but otherwise both kids were awake and happy (and I scored a 13!! My highest yet - maybe the key for me to do well on the MCAT is to have lots of distractions and noise?? LOL).

It was much easier as an undergrad when I didn't have kids. I did a lot of studying in the evening and some during the afternoon (never in the morning ... I'm a grouch in the morning).

I'm a night owl. I have to have it completely quiet to focus, and that's the only time when it is.

Mostly, I like to study at night, until around 2am. But, I study between classes a lot too. If its a while between them I'll drive over to Starbucks and study with my ipod for about 2 hours before and after class. Last semester I went there so much they started making my coffee for me when they saw me walk in because I always get the same thing. But, its almost impossible for me to get any studying in without light music in the background.

Now that I'm taking a class with other med students (Medical Histology), all I do is study, on the metro, while I'm waiting on my daughter to get out of camp, in the morning before class, in the library after class, during my morning bathroom "rituals" (use your imagination [Big Grin] )!!! If this is what med shcool is going to be like, I'd better get a maid and cook lined up now!!!! [Tired]

I used to be able to study until 12:00 am easily- even after a full day of work and/or school - but the last two semesters - I find that I really can't study much past 8 or 9 -- so it looks like I'm going to have to shift my study times to early mornings and weekends during the day... I'm with pathdr2b though - I study whenever I can (while eating, working out, etc.) -- although I am considering making my work out time my "study-free" time.

They say that its best to study during daylight hours, because at night, our body is preparing for sleep. Its also said to study in 50 min increments, like 5 min prep, 40 min study, 5 min break, and repeat. with breaks inbetween, it gives your brain a chance to soak in the information. and she also said that 30hrs/week is the amount of time most premed students spend studying in order to achieve a 3.7 or better gpa. one more thing, she said its always better to look over you notes from class either right after class, or within 24 hours, to retain better. This was a wonderful lady who came to speak to us in the smdep program at the uw from lsu. I can't wait to try this out in the fall.

Vanessa,
Every school is different, so it's very hard to generalize. We usually didn't have weekend obligations, although study groups frequently met on weekends. The first 2 years are generally similar to college (Aug-May), but after that, it's year-round. We got about 2 weeks off for the holidays, but things change year to year. As far as hours, that's up to the individual school, but it's more than a full time job, that's for sure. If you do a search, you might find more information.

Back to the original topic, as for me and studying, when I was in med school it was usually in the early mornings and evenings, depending on what block we were in and how much I had to put into it. I had to have thing absolutely quiet because I am very easily distracted.

And yes, I'm replying to random topics at 3am. [hyper] I'm wide awake and am staying on nights for a few more days, so I can't very well go to sleep at a normal time. And I'm bored... (And no, I'm not going to even TRY to tackle the pile of journals accumulating on my desk...)
