Emergency Medicine CME

Continuing Medical Education (CME) is a type of education in which physicians continue learning after having completed their medical degree. Many different types of CMEs have their own levels of importance, and physicians are welcome to choose the courses that interest them or the courses that would best serve their abilities as a physician. Different types of CMEs include the following: family medicine, emergency medicine, orthopedics, pediatric medicine, and others. This article focuses on CMEs that are about emergency medicine, which include many course options. For example, learners can undergo a live CME with situational learning in a hospital or in online courses. In addition to these, there are DVDs and CDs, online journals, and research that can accompany the CME courses.

CME is very important for physicians as it helps them remain up to date about new technologies and innovations in the field of emergency medicine. This also provides them with insight into new treatments and a clearer understanding of rare and life threatening conditions. Almost every physician can benefit from emergency CMEs. Emergency medicine requires a lot of dedication and efficiency and this is possible with the Emergency medicine CME. This CME is particularly important to a physician in the ER because every case is different and physicians require state of the art knowledge and techniques. One cannot be successful in emergency situations without advanced knowledge. The cases are often extremely rare and sensitive and the maximum treatment lasts 2-3 hours. Efficiency and timeliness are crucial to a patient’s life.

CME courses are created by a joint alliance of professional associations, hospitals, educational institutions, nursing schools, and medical education agencies. It is a highly reviewed and strictly administered curriculum. The CME requirements vary in different states and countries. In the state of Arizona for example, an average 40 hour CME is required for every two years. The physicians are monitored by the ACCME (the Accreditation Council of Continuing Medical Education.) A professional certification for CME planners is established under the National Commission for Certification CME Professionals, which requires the physicians to pass a standardized test.

An accredited CME in emergency medicine is very important. A physician spends 4 to 5 years in medical school which is followed by a residency, but this is not the end of the learning phase. For the rest of his or her career a physician must be enrolled in an accredited institute to continue the learning process. This improves one’s skills as a physician and also improves patient care. An accredited CME involves all aspects of medicine ranging from medical specialties to patient care and health care management. Physicians who are a part of the accredited CME have access to a lot of benefits which include: the maintenance of licensure, maintaining the specialty board certification, credentialing, professional society membership, and other professional privileges.

The institutions that offer CME courses are called CME providers and they need to be accredited with the ACCME. The ACCME helps them in the initial accreditation as well as the reaccreditation. The amount of time, resources, and individual skill sets will determine the type of CME a physician chooses.

There are various organizations such as: ACEP, AAFP, CEME, etc. that offer the Emergency Medicine CME. The CDs and DVDs are also available on and can prove very helpful to aspiring Emergency Medicine Physicians. There are different institutes that offer the CME in emergency medicine.

The ACEP is the American College of Emergency Physicians. An ACEP member’s CME requirements include completion of 150 hours every 3 years to keep their membership current. The credentials of this institute are monitored by the American Medical Association (AMA).

The Center for Emergency Medicine Education, is associated with and accredited under the ACCME. It offers a high risk emergency medicine course, pediatric emergency medicine boot camps and other courses that are designed by professionals of the emergency field. It is focused on teaching and improving the abilities of Emergency Medicine Physicians. All that is required is registration in the chosen course.

The Emergency and Urgent Care CME format for the American Association of Family Practitioners includes: live CME Events and online CME and self-study CME tools. Registration is required for events and there are DVDs available as well.

In addition to these, medical schools like Harvard Medical School and Stanford Medical School also offer the Emergency Medicine CME.
