MomMD.com Forum: Moderator Overview

In general, the responsibilities of a moderator include monitoring for spam posts, ensuring that posts are located in the correct topic/category of the forum (and moving them, if necessary), encouraging discussion, enforcing civility in a heated debate (without taking sides), and finally, notifying forum administrators of issues/concerns.

Thankfully, MomMD users are awesome and our main issues tend to revolve around cleaning up spam and deleting spammer accounts (an admin duty).

As with most forums, there are two types of MomMD moderators: Category Moderators and Global Moderators. Category Moderators opt to moderate only designated sections of the forum, while Global Moderators have moderator privileges for all areas.

All moderators are able to perform the following functions:

Post-specific Functions

         Approve posts pending review

         Delete posts

         Merge posts with another topic

Receive (by email) posts reported by users

Topic-specific Functions

         Delete topics

         Lock or unlock topics

         Sticky or unsticky topics

         Reply in locked topics

         Split topics

         Move topics to another category

         Merge topics

Moderators may be able to perform the following functions, depending on forum configuration settings:

         View and restore deleted posts

Receive email notification of new messages posted in forum

The information that follows provides the details of performing technical moderator tasks.

Choose whether you would like to 鈥淢ove only selected message鈥 or 鈥淢ove selected message and all [#] messages posted after it鈥 by selecting the desired radio button.

Choose the desired destination of the message(s) by selecting a 鈥淭arget Category鈥 and/or a 鈥淭arget Topic鈥 from the dropdown menus.

Topic-Related Moderator Functions:

Delete Topic

:

Select this button while viewing a topic thread to delete the entire topic. The topic is deleted immediately, without a confirmation prompt.

You may also delete a topic while in category view.

1.       In category view, select the checkbox to the right of the topic.

2.       Then, at the bottom of the category view, select 鈥淒elete Selected鈥 from the dropdown 鈥淐hoose Action鈥 menu.

3.       Click 鈥淕o鈥.

Note that the category view鈥檚 鈥淐hoose Action鈥 menu process can also be used to Move, Approve and Undelete topics, depending on system configurations.

Moderate Topic

:

Selecting this button while viewing a topic thread opens the MODERATE TOPIC screen where you can change the topic鈥檚 icon, move the entire topic thread to a new location and, optionally, change the topic subject.

To move the topic to a new location, make the following selections:

Choose the desired destination of the topic by selecting a 鈥淭arget Category鈥 and, if desired, a 鈥淭arget Topic鈥 from the dropdown menus.

To the right of the 鈥淣ew Subject鈥 prompt, change the subject line of the message, as needed.

To leave a pointer to the new topic location in the old location, check the 鈥淟eave shadow topic pointing to new location” box. Once checked, a placeholder will display in the original category acting as a pointer to the topic’s new location.

This feature directs users to the new location and also acts as a way to 鈥渓ist鈥 a topic in more than one category even though the discussion activity is restricted to only one category.

If the 鈥淟eave shadow topic pointing to new location” box is not checked, the topic will be moved but there will be no reference to it in the old location.

Once the topic destination and options have been entered, select 鈥淧roceed鈥 to perform the action.

To return to the original Topic location without making any changes, select 鈥淏ack鈥.

Note that you can also quickly move a topic using the category view鈥檚 鈥淐hoose Action鈥 menu. See 鈥淒ELETE TOPIC鈥 above for information on the process used with the 鈥淐hoose Action鈥 menu.

Sticky/Unsticky Topic

Lock/Unlock Topic
