I turned down two more highly ranked schools to go to my state school, and I am so glad that I did. It is such a huge relief to realize that my debt burden is going to be an order of magnitude smaller than if I had gone to the “dream” schools. However, I don’t want a PhD and I dislike research. I want to do purely clinical work, and I don’t think I want to subspecialize. What I’ve heard in general is what people have posted above. Unless you have your heart set on research, it doesn’t matter all that much. What matters more actually is where you do your residency, because people tend to stay in the area they do their residency in. Also, your residency program is more pertinent to your specialty choice and specialty career.
