Well, I would say DO NOT GIVE UP, FOLLOW YOUR HEART. My EX-husband never supported my dream to become a doctor either. He left after I took the MCAT and had a 6 month old and a 3 year old at the time. I wasn’t sure how I would do it but I applied to med school and got in. So here I am 4 years later, 36, still have the two kids and a new, great husband. Not to mention the fact I also moved 5000 miles from home to go to school.
My philosophy: DO NOT EVER, EVER LET SOME MAN DICTATE WHAT YOU CAN AND CANNOT DO!!!! They are just showing their own weakness by putting you down.
To Raine: You are not that old! Enjoy your children while they are young. Take steps to get ready to be able to apply to med school and see what happens. Don’t let the whining husband bring you down. If he threatens divorce – it will be hard – but you can help him pack his bags. In fact, I will come help him pack!! Damn him for putting you down.
My adopted mom went to med school at 38 after being a nurse for 18 years. One of my best friends is graduating at 44. My “little” sister at school started at 51 with all her children grown.
There is not rush, enjoy your kids, plan, apply, succeed.
Feel free to PM me if you need be.
I’d like to add that the key for me is NOT to focus t at all on getting my goals acheived by a certain time, but just to keep moving forward however slowly towards them!!!
