Anyone believe in the hospitalist system ( vs. the old fashioned “do-it-all type of doc)?

I believe in hospitalists because they help me set limits on what time I am going to make available to patients. In Baltimore it’s becoming a non-issue — very few hospitals now let the outpatient psychiatrists continue inpatient care. The frustrating part is that sometimes the inpatient docs don’t seem interested in talking to me even when I call, offer to fax records, etc. I’m not sure the care is as good, but I think that’s true in general because of the pressure to get people out the door so quickly.

The “hospitalist” mentality is sort of at odds with the whole premise behind family practice…BUT I recently entered a situation where I am “doc for the week” and NEVR go to the office, only round, do admits, take call, do treadmills, scopes etc, deliveries…
so I think of it as a pseudo-hospitalist system bc we all take turns…
